Tuition and Funding
We understand that financing your education can be challenging.
We're committed to supporting our graduate students financially and rewarding academic achievement and excellence. Memorial University offers a number of scholarships, bursaries, research and graduate assistant oppurtunties, as well as support in applying for external research funding.
Tuition Fees
Memorial has some of the lowest tuition fees in Canada. All figures can be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies and in the University Calendar.
Funding for Graduate Students
Students in the Master of Arts program are usually eligible to receive some form of financial support. This is often guaranteed during the admissions process; however funding varies based on academic merit. Funding comes from a number of sources, as outlined below.
SGS Fellowships
Each year the department has a baseline budget of graduate funding which it offers to new students on a competitive basis. Students must meet minimum School of Graduate Studies (SGS) eligibility requirements to receive this form of support.
Faculty of HSS "GA" Funding
Graduate Assistantships (or "GAs") are awarded and paid on a semester basis. In Political Science, GAs are normally assigned work as teaching assistants. Each GA unit consists of 60 hours of work over a 14-week period within a semester (i.e., an average of 4 hours per week). Students will be asked to apply for GA funding prior to the semester.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
This award is for citizens and or permanent resident of Canada, who have completed or are about to complete a bachelor's degree, or are already pursuing a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences. SSHRC provides both MA and Ph.D. scholarships to students pursuing Political Science.
Of particular note to Memorial students is the Canada Graduate Scholarship Program (CGS) - Masters Scholarship, valued at $27,000 per year. If you are applying for a SSHRC Masters Scholarship, it is a good idea to do so in advance of your application to our program. The Graduate Coordinator and supervisory faculty would be more than happy to support you.
Note: In 2008 the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) became known as the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships. The terms and conditions of the CGS program remain the same.
Other Awards
Information about other graduate scholarships and bursaries is available on the website of the School of Graduate Studies.
