This is your third year of Memorial Political Science!

You are at the half-way mark in your degree. To stay on track as a Political Science Honours or Major, here’s a checklist of things to keep in mind over your next two semesters:

A checkmark Enrol in POSC 3010 (Empirical Methods in Political Science), which is required for Honours and Majors, plus at least 4 other Political Science courses (12 credit hours).
A checkmark Take courses across the Political Science subfields, to identify your interests. Majors must take at least one course in every subfield, except for methods and theory, in addition to their required courses.
A checkmark Review your general degree map to get tips on tackling general BA requirements, studying, safety and wellbeing, career advice, and more.
A checkmark Triple check your eligibility for faculty and university awards and bursaries! To ensure eligibility, you should aim to have taken 10 courses (30 credit hours) in Political Science and other departments by the start of your third year.
A checkmark If you're in need of part-time employment, look to see if there are any positions available on MUCEP—Memorial's Undergraduate Career Experience Program—that fit your interests and expertise. This can be a great way of also meeting fellow students and faculty, while building your resume.

Go for Honours!

Looking to concentrate on a particular topic, or working closely with a favourite professor on a special project? At the start of their year, Majors may apply to the Political Science Honours program, if they haven't already. It's the perfect path for students looking to go on to law or graduate school. Get a head start by contacting professors in the department that you might be interested in working with in your 4th year, and be sure to take their courses.

Need references?

If you’re contemplating law school, graduate school, or internships after your BA degree, you will need strong reference letters from faculty. Start to think about who you might like to write you these letters of reference, then take several courses with those professors to give them a chance to get to know you and your work. Don’t be afraid to also visit your professors during their office hours.

Have you written a top notch paper in one of your Political Science courses? Then consider submitting it for publication in  Mapping Politics, the Memorial student journal. Course papers that earn high grades can also be submitted as candidates for various awards, like the Clyde K. Wells Prize or the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Prize. Some of these awards require faculty to nominate students. So, let your professors know if you think you’re a good candidate for these awards.
