Safety
We strive to ensure that all students, researchers, staff, and faculty have a safe learning and working environment. To do this, our Departmental Safety Committee works with the Building Safety Committee and the University's Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
Training
All lab workers and lab supervisors have a responsibility to work safely, and training is an essential part of meeting this need.
- The University Laboratory Safety Manual outlines responsibilities and best practices
- Because each laboratory is different, supervisors provide a customized Laboratory Safety Plan for their workers.
- Training records ensure that safety is a consistent priority.
WHMIS and Laboratory Safety Training is available on-line through the Desire2Learn system at CITL (https://www.citl.mun.ca/).
For students, you must register for these sessions by completing the training registration on MUN's Self Serve for Safety 1000 (CRN 55709). Access to the training will be available within 24 hours after the registration is completed.
For staff and faculty, log into Desire2Learn to complete the on-line form.
(Please note that certificates are not provided for on-line training. Please print your on-line transcript for proof of training.)
There are many trained first aid responders throughout the Chemistry-Building.
Chemical storage
There are best practices for storing laboratory chemicals that can reduce the risk of accidents and injury.
Do you need more labels for chemicals in your lab? These are available free of charge from Memorial University's Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
Inventories
To comply with Provincial government regulations, Memorial University's Department of Environmental Health & Safety keeps room-by-room inventories of equipment and chemicals that are used on campus.
- Chemical Waste Disposal form
- Equipment Register form
- Information for X-ray equipment and other radiation sources
- Temporarily storing boxes in a hallway? Please use these.
- Door safety sign (fillable PDF)
Our chemical inventories are fully electronic with a bar-code system to make it easier to keep this information up-to-date. Learn more from Memorial's Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
