Memorial University scientists and researchers will join young students onboard the Coastal Explorers program this summer as they get an up close look at the marine environment of Conception Bay. The Departments of Ocean Sciences and Geography and the Marine Institute are all onboard.

Youth aged 11 to 17 will choose from an exciting line-up of summer workshops and day camps as they join the Coastal Explorers adventure. One group will learn all about sharks, and will attempt to capture, tag and release a shark for an ongoing research project. Another will learn to pilot a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as they explore the underwater world.

Other students will try on the role of marine scientist and researcher, or learn the ropes of navigation and marine safety. Many will become general coastal explorers, immersed in the wide and fascinating world of ocean science and technology.

These marine science adventures take place onboard a Transport Canada-certified 42-ft vessel, led by an experienced captain and crew, and guided by qualified marine interpreters. Ocean scientists and researchers will join the adventures and contribute to the learning experience.

Memorial scientists have embraced and helped shape the new Coastal Explorers program, which is part of a larger Ocean Education Initiative for Newfoundland and Labrador youth, led by the Oceans Learning Partnership. Through the new partnership, MUN has joined with scientists and educators from Parks Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and others to create exciting hands-on programming that exposes young students to the richness of our marine environment and the many career possibilities it presents.
