Get Involved

The Seal Facility offers a variety of employment and volunteer opportunities. We aim to provide students with an opportunity for hands on learning in the field of animal husbandry therefore priority is given to students attending Memorial University.

Our staff consists of two full-time employees, seasonal summer students, MUCEP and ISWEP students, WISE program students, Saturday staff, volunteers and occasional work term students.

MUCEP (Memorial’s Undergraduate Career Experience Program)

Jobs are provided by Memorial University to provide meaningful part-time work experience for undergraduate students. Each semester two MUCEP students are hired to feed the seals once or twice a week, depending on how many hours your MUCEP is (40 or 80). You can apply online at www.mun.ca at the beginning of each semester.

ISWEP (International Student Work Experience Program)

ISWEP is an on-campus part-time employment program for undergraduate International students and ESL students with a valid study permit. We provide one ISWEP job opportunity working with the seals. You can apply online at the beginning of each semester at www.mun.ca.

Saturday Staff

Two students are hired to feed the seals on Saturdays. You must be a Memorial University undergraduate student to apply for this position.

WISE NL (Women in Science and Engineering Newfoundland and Labrador)

Wise offers a summer student employment program for grade 11 girls interested in science and engineering. We offer one WISE student an opportunity to spend their summer working alongside our staff learning how to care for the seals.

Volunteer

Volunteers are trained to feed and care for the seals. There are often volunteer opportunities available during fall and spring. Opportunities are more limited in the summer months because there are two full-time seasonal students.

Work Term Opportunities

Although we cannot offer any monetary compensation the seal facility is always open to the possibility of taking on a student wishing to fulfill their work term working in an animal care setting. In the past we’ve taken on students completing various programs including veterinary technician and zoology diplomas. Students are not required to be attending Memorial University.

Current Opportunities

There are currently no opportunities available.

If you have any questions or inquiries about the jobs and volunteer opportunities listed above please contact Christine Vickers at cvickers@mun.ca
