NLCAHR 25th Anniversary Celebration
Healthy Legacy, Promising Future: 25 Years of Research and Engagement at NLCAHR | November 21, 2024
This event welcomed guests from university, community and healthcare and included presenters who shared a range of perspectives about NLCAHR's legacy and a discussion about future directions, including:
- Perspectives from the Faculty of Medicine: Dr. Dolores McKeen, Dean of Medicine, Memorial University
- One Drop Makes a Ripple— NLCAHR’s Impact on an Early Career Researcher: Dr. Michelle Ploughman, Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation, Neuroplasticity and Brain Recovery
- 25 Years of Excellence in Research and Engagement: Dr. Stephen Bornstein, Professor (retired) Political Science and Medicine and founder/ former Director of NLCAHR on the Centre’s history
- Decision Support for the Health System in a Period of Transition: David Diamond, former CEO NL Health Services
- The Research & Knowledge Exchange (RKE) on Aging and the Creation of the Aging Research Centre of NL: Dr. Sharon Buehler, Honorary Research Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University, co-convener of the RKE on Aging.
- The Phoenix Garden: Helping Communities Grow Together: Dr. Jan Buley, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, Memorial University, co-convener of the NLCAHR Research & Knowledge Exchange on Horticultural Therapy spoke about an innovative community program with roots at NLCAHR
- Keynote Address | Building Evidence Support Systems for Healthcare Decision Makers: How NLCAHR Was Ahead of the Wave : Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw, Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa; Senior Scientist, Clinical Epidemiology, Ottawa Health Research Institute, Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus; and Canada Research Chair in Health Knowledge Transfer and Uptake spoke about the Evidence Commission and prioritizing building evidence support systems, and how NLCAHR was ahead of the wave in doing this for NL decision makers.

SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE | Building the global knowledge architecture to improve health | Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw is a world leader in implementation research and knowledge translation. His innovative work focuses on how to increase the use of evidence-based research by healthcare professionals and healthcare systems to improve quality of care. Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2019, Dr. Grimshaw is a Senior Scientist, Clinical Epidemiology, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa, and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Health Knowledge Transfer and Uptake. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal College of Edinburgh and has twice received the CIHR Knowledge Translation award. In 2018, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) awarded. Dr. Grimshaw the Barer-Flood career achievement award for Health Services and Policy Research. Dr. Grimshaw has produced over 550 peer-reviewed publications and has received over $50 million in CIHR funding as a Principal Investigator and $67 million as a Co-Investigator, including a prestigious CIHR Foundation Award Grant.
