Centre d'études franco-terreneuviennes (CEFT)
The Centre d'études franco-terreneuviennes (CEFT) was founded in 1975 by Dr. Gerald Thomas under the auspices of the Department of French and Spanish at Memorial University, with an eventual cross-over into the Department of Folklore. The core of the collection was the fieldwork done by Dr. Thomas in the course of his research for his doctorate in Folklore, as well as the research done by colleagues during that time period. Over the 30+ years of its functioning as an independent archive, it became the repository for the work of Dr. Thomas, his colleagues, and his students, in the form of papers, field recordings, photographs, and other documents relating to the history, language, culture and society of "les Franco-terreneuviens" - the French Newfoundlanders.
The purpose of CEFT, according to Dr. Thomas, was threefold. First, it provided a specialized and constantly growing source of material for teaching, research, and study. Second, it promoted the on-going collection of the folklore of Franco-Newfoundland culture. Third, and most important in his view, was CEFT's position as a repository for the folklore, language and history of a minority culture within the greater Newfoundland culture. His ultimate goal with regards to this collection was to make the information available to the community that produced it - to encourage the growth, teaching, and maintenance of the unique language and culture of les Franco-terreneuviens.
In 2011, the Association régionale de la côte ouest (ARCO), a non-profit Francophone organization dedicated to maintaining and promoting the language and culture of the west coast of the island of Newfoundland, obtained funding for a project to digitize and publish to the web the French language holdings of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). With the assistance of MUNFLA and the Digital Archives Initiative (DAI), the Centre d'études franco-terreneuviennes Collection will fulfill the promise of CEFT by making the French-language holdings available to a wider audience of both the community that created it and the world at large.

Le Centre d'études franco-terreneuviennes (CEFT) a été fondé en 1975 par M. Gérald Thomas, Ph. D., sous l'égide du Département de français et d'espagnol de l'Université Memorial, et s'est par la suite étendu au Département de folklore de l'Université. L'essentiel de la collection provenait des enquëtes menées sur le terrain par M. Thomas dans le cadre de ses recherches doctorales en folklore, mais aussi des recherches réalisées par des collègues durant cette période. Au fil de ses quelque trente années d'existence en tant que lieu d'archivage indépendant, le Centre est devenu le répertoire des travaux de M. Thomas et des collègues et étudiants de ce dernier. La documentation y est conservée sous différentes formes: articles, enregistrements réalisés sur le terrain, photos et autres documents portant sur l'histoire, la langue, la culture et la société des Franco-Terre-Neuviens.
D'après M. Thomas, le CEFT avait trois objectifs. Premièrement, il fournissait une source spécialisée et croissante de matériel d'enseignement, de recherche et d'étude. Deuxièmement, il encourageait la collecte continue de renseignements sur le folklore de la culture franco-terre-neuvienne. Troisièmement (l'objectif le plus important selon M. Thomas), le CEFT constituait un répertoire du folklore, de la langue et de l'histoire d'une culture minoritaire au sein de la culture terre-neuvienne. En créant le CEFT, M. Thomas voulait en fin de compte rendre l'information disponible pour la collectivité qui l'avait produite. Il voulait favoriser l'épanouissement, l'enseignement et le maintien de la langue et de la culture uniques des Franco-Terre-Neuviens.
En 2011, l'Association régionale de la côte ouest (ARCO), un organisme francophone sans but lucratif voué au maintien et à la promotion de la langue et de la culture de la côte ouest de l'île de Terre-Neuve, a obtenu des fonds pour un projet visant à numériser et à diffuser sur le Web la documentation de langue française de la Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). Avec l'aide de la MUNFLA et de la Digital Archives Initiative (DAI), la collection du Centre d'études franco-terreneuviennes réalisera la promesse du CEFT en rendant sa documentation de langue française disponible pour un auditoire plus vaste, soit la collectivité qui l'a générée et le monde entier.
