Transition to Discipline (TTD)

This emphasizes orientation and assessment of new trainees. TTD includes surgical foundations and initial assessments in obstetrics and gynecology (see EPA list below). Surgical bootcamp will be completed early in year 1.

Community OBGYN (2 blocks)

Trainees will be introduced to general obstetrics and gynecology at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville. Expect one on one learning from staff in obstetrics and gynecology at a rural site.

PGY1 Community Rotation Objectives

Surgical Foundations (SF)

SF is a national program administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. It is a mandatory program for all surgical residents in Canada (general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, plastics, neuro, obs/gyn, cardiac, urology). It includes the foundational knowledge common to all surgeons, and completion of the program is mandatory before the Royal College allows you to sit for your final licensure examinations. The typical length of completion of the program is approximately 18 months.

Here at Memorial University, we typically have 10 surgical residents per year. These 10 are usually comprised of four (4) residents studying General Surgery, four (4) studying Obstetrics and Gynecology and two (2) studying Orthopedics.

Junior Obstetrics ‘Case Room’ Rotation (3 blocks)

PGY1 year will be focused on obstetrics, whereas PGY2 is geared toward gynecology. In the junior obstetrics rotation, trainees will be paired with a senior OB resident as their mentor. The overall goal of this PGY1 rotation is for the resident to gain exposure to the workings of the labour and delivery unit, with the aim to gain confidence in basic skills in obstetrics.
