Faculty A-Z
Ross Feldman
Professor, Chair of Medicine MD, FACP, FAHA, FRCPCWhat brought me to MUN? What keeps me at MUN?
I came to Memorial for the opportunity, the people and the adventure. I wanted to be a part of an organization and a Discipline that was growing and developing. I am grateful to be able to have a role to help foster that development. Beyond that the opportunity to be able to have the culture, music and dramatic land and sea scapes of Newfoundland and Labrador at my doorstep is a great fringe benefit!
Education:
M.D. Queen’s University
Training:
Internal Medicine, University of Toronto
Clinical Pharmacology, Vanderbilt University
Research/Teaching Summary:
My clinical research focuses on the management of hypertension and specifically the development of innovative strategies to improve blood pressure control. My major fundamental research program focused on the elucidation of novel cell signaling mechanisms of vascular regulation/dysregulation linked to the development of hypertension and atherosclerosis. The laboratory has uncovered important mechanisms which may explain the basis for some of the benefits (and risks) of hormone replacement and more generally the effects on cardiovascular function/development of heart disease of estrogen and other related hormones like aldosterone.
Among a range of editorial responsibilities, I am currently an Associate Editor for both the Canadian Journal of Cardiology and for the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology. I am also a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology. He is the immediate past editor of Pharmacological Reviews.
I have taken leadership roles in a number of scientific and professional organizations in the disciplines of medicine and pharmacology. I have been Vice-President of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Chair of the Clinical Pharmacology Division of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. I have served as Chair of the Scientific Review Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and chair of the Research Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and as a member of the Board of Directors of the HSFO. I am the past Governor of the Ontario Chapter, American College of Physicians.
A major focus of my efforts has been in the prevention and control of hypertension in Canada and specifically in the knowledge translation of optimal treatment approaches for hypertension management. Among past leadership positions, I served as the first Chair of the Steering Committee of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program. As well, I served as President of the Canadian Hypertension Society. I was also the founding President of Hypertension Canada- leading the process of integrating the efforts of the Canadian Hypertension Society, Canadian Hypertension Education Program and Blood Pressure Canada into what is now the second largest cardiovascular disease not-for-profit agency in Canada .
Awards:
I have received a number of awards and scholarships in recognition of contributions in research, teaching and for my efforts in the prevention and control of hypertension in Canada. These include the George Morris Piersol Research and Teaching Scholarship from the American College of Physicians, a Career Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the Burroughs-Wellcome Clinical Pharmacology Award and the Senior Investigator Award from the Canadian Society for Clinical Pharmacology as well as the Distinguished Service/Research Award of the Canadian Hypertension Society. In 2010 I received the George Fodor Award from Hypertension Canada for outstanding contributions to the prevention and control of hypertension.
