General Internal Medicine Program
Welcome to the General Internal Medicine Program.
The General Internal Medicine (GIM) Program is a 2-year subspecialty program designed to prepare trainees to function in the diverse capacities of a general internist. There are primarily two teaching sites - the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital (SCMH). Our rotations provide ample opportunity to allow residents to develop enhanced skills in areas that will meet their future practice needs, with an overall goal to produce general internal medicine specialists that serve the needs of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Atlantic region. The GIM program follows the Royal College Competency by Design (CBD) framework. The classic training template consists of four stages - Transition to Discipline, Foundations, Core of Discipline and Transition to Practice.
The GIM program is designed with learner wellbeing in mind: the flexibility of the overall program schedule, a low call burden and the non-essential nature of the fellows on rotation promote wellbeing throughout the program.
