About Us

The Discipline of Medicine is one of the largest Disciplines in the faculty of Medicine.

It encompasses all areas of Internal Medicine including:

The Discipline currently has approximately 50 full-time Faculty Members, the majority of whom are located and work in the Health Sciences Center and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s, NL.   We also have approximately 65 part-time Faculty members in St. John’s and over 125 in distributed sites elsewhere in the province, including Clarenville, Gander, Grand Fall-Winsor, Corner Brook, as well as in our affiliated sites in New Brunswick. The result is a highly diverse group of clinicians, researchers and mentors that are able to provide exceptional training opportunities for learners at all levels across the entire breadth of Internal Medicine.

The Discipline’s priority is medical education.  Our faculty members are fully integrated into the undergraduate medical program and teach in a wide variety of areas.  Many of our Faculty have additional expertise in medical education and take on key leadership and administrative roles in the Faculty of Medicine. All Discipline members are engaged in teaching and mentoring postgraduate trainees in our various residency programs.

Our Faculty members mentor graduate students, residents and undergraduate medical students.  Our residency training programs place strong emphasis on teaching research skills and completing projects. More information about research in the Discipline can be found in the researcher profiles.

The Discipline currently supports four residency training programs accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).  The Discipline of Oncology supports an additional accredited subspecialty residency program in Medical Oncology.
