Accepting Applications for Master of Data Science (MDSC) Programme
Data sicence is a multidisciplinary profession, currently in great demand. The need of professionals in the field is only poised to grow in the coming decades. Data science includes many fields such as statistics, learning and forecasting, predictive analysis and optimization amongst many others. It uses scientific methods to knowledge discovering and inference from data acorss a wide range of application domains.
A graduate from this programme will rightly call themselves a data scientist and will be a professional equipped with a diverse and wide-ranging skill-set to gather vast amounts of data to analyse and synthesise the information into new knowledge and/or actionalbe plans. In today's data and information technology-oriented society, data scientists have evolved at the forefront of the data revolution.
Memorial University is accepting applications for the 2021-2022 academic year. For more information, please see the Faculty of Science site and School of Graduate Studies site.
Programme Overview
The proposed graduate programme is interdisciplinary and data driven. The programme consists of three propaedeutic, five core and two elective courses, plus a case study series and a capstone project. The proposed mandatory courses are:
DSCI-5001 Statistical inference for data science (propaedeutic)*
DSCI-5002 Basics of Python and R (propaedeutic)
DSCI-5003 Linear algebra for regression analysus (propaedeutic)
STAT-6519 Regression models
STAT-6559 Statistical exploration of data
DSCI-6601 Practical machine learning
DSCI-6602 Deep learning and artificial intelligence
DSCI-6607 Programmatic data analysis using R and Python
DSCI-6690 Data science case study series
DSCI-695A/B Capstone project
There will be great flexibility for the two elective courses, and ideally, they will be connected to the data.
*Propaedeutic courses constitute the online component of the program to be completed before the on-campus instruction.
Delivery Model
All courses are designed in such a way that students will have exposure to the data generating mechanism, understanding how data are collected, how it can be analyses and interpret the results. The study course material as well as the self-evaluation material will be provided on the online platform (say Brightspace) in May to enable the students to successfully complete all three propaedeutic courses - DSIC-5001, DSCI-5002 and DSCI-5003. Prior to July 1st and registering for the courses for the Fall term, students need to submit self-assessment statement on the completion for these courses in order to be eligible for registration. Typically, majority of the courses will be completed in Fall and Winter term, and expected to complete the Capstone project in the Spring term.
Application Process
Applications should be submitted online. If you have any questions concering the completion of the online application or if you are unable to access a credit card to pat the application fee, please contact the School of Graduate Studies by email at sgs@mun.ca, but calling (709) 864-2445, or by facsimile at (709) 864-4702. Please note that if you are attending or have attended Memorial University in the past, you should submit your application through the Self-Service.
Students interested in the MDSC programme must submit their graduate application by February 28.
