Motivational Teaching Award
Contents:
The primary function of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is the creation and dissemination of knowledge in mathematics and statistics through the education of its students and through scholarly activity. To advance the first of these goals, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has established, in 1997, the Mathematics and Statistics Motivational Teaching Award. The Award honours faculty members who have encouraged students in the department to undertake deep and demanding study in mathematics and/or statistics, and so have made study in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics a valuable experience for students. The award recognizes success in inspiring students to further study in mathematics and/or statistics, and in generating a stimulating and exciting intellectual environment.
To be eligible for this Award, a nominee must be a full-time member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on the St. John's campus, and have a minimum of five years service in the department. Any recipient of the Award within the previous five years is not eligible for the Award. The Head of Department is not eligible to receive the Award.
The Selection Committee shall consist of five students, of whom four shall be undergraduate students registered for a degree program offered by the department, and one shall be a graduate student registered in a degree program offered by the department, subject to the following conditions:
The members of the committee shall be elected for a one-year term in September of each year. The Office of the Head of Department will call for nominations for members of the Selection Committee during the first week of regular classes, and shall check the eligibility of all nominees. Voting shall take place at the General Office of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which shall have a list of eligible voters. Voters must produce student identification. The committee shall elect its own chair and secretary from within its membership.
The committee shall call for nominations during the first week of October. Nominations must be in writing and be signed by at least four students. Nominations must document fully the reasons for the nomination. The committee may seek additional information about the nominee from any appropriate source. The committee may not consider any anonymous material. The committee shall complete its deliberations no later than the end of November. The committee shall report its recommendation to the Head of Department, who shall, in conjunction with the President of the student society, announce and present the award. (The committee may decide to make no recommendation for an award if it deems so.)
