May 22, 1970 Memorial awards its first Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The recipients were Dr. Helen Elizabeth Bradbury, biology, and Dr. Leona Marie Doerksen, english.
July 1, 1970 Dr. E.R. Seary appointed first Henrietta Harvey Professor Of English.
November 1970 Memorial's men's soccer team won the 1970-71 A.I.A.A. Soccer Conference Championship. Alan Ross was of the coach of the team. The team also won the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union Soccer Championship.

March 25, 1976 Official opening of the Memorial University Pre-School Centre in the Burton's Pond Apartment Complex for the use of the children of university students, faculty and staff.
April 1976 The Maritime History Group (MHG) is awarded a $733,000 program grant by the Canada Council to examine the rise and fall of the shipping industry in Atlantic Canada and its effects on the social and economic history of the area. The principal investigators are Dr. Keith Matthews, Dr. David Alexander and Professor Gerald Panting of the MHG.

May 26, 1979 Official launch of the Anniversary Fund Campaign to raise $10 million for a new library building, for a permanent building for the School of Administration and Commerce, and for research enrichment and scholarships.
