Past projects

Between 2021-2023, The John and Judy Bragg Family Foundation Applied Research Fund (Labrador) was used to support a number of community farm-based research projects related to Northern food systems, food security, and food sovereignty.

Brief overviews of each of the projects are provided below. We are proud to have supported all of this important work!

The goal of the project was to facilitate a series of consultations and engagement activities to help envision how the health care system in Labrador can strengthen access to traditional foods in line with community-level priorities and integrated with approaches to food systems being taken by Indigenous communities.

Project Lead: Darren Dinsmore, Owner/Operator, Aldercroft Farm (Happy Valley-Goose Bay)

Funding Stream: Start-up Grant

The goal of the project was to test different types of soil amendments simultaneously to assess which is the ideal to enhance central Labrador sandy soils in order to enhance local food production, to produce forage locally at lower costs to local farmers, and indirectly lower greenhouse emissions through local rather than shipped materials from away.

Project Lead: Darren Dinsmore, Owner/Operator, Aldercroft Farm (Happy Valley-Goose Bay)

Funding Stream: Communication Grant

The goal of this project was to produce informational videos about farming in central Labrador to inform the public and inspire local farmers to work on soil health and regenerative agriculture.
