Heather Angnatok

Elders, Aunties, and Uncles Program Coordinator, Labrador Campus

Heather Angnatok is an Inuk from Nain, Nunatsiavut, with over 20 years of experience working in her home community to plan, facilitate, and deliver Inuit language and culturally land-based programs. Her extensive work includes organizing summer and winter camps, annual regional youth symposiums, national Inuit youth summits, regional Elder gatherings, traditional sewing workshops, young girls’ empowerment initiatives, youth leadership programs, and career trips, as well as developing a Nunatsiavut youth strategy and revitalizing throat singing and drum dancing.

As the Program Coordinator for the Elders, Aunties, and Uncles Program at the Labrador Campus and a UArctic Fellow, Heather plays a vital role in strengthening the campus's connections with Indigenous communities. She supports educational and community programming; enhances student, staff, and faculty success; integrates Indigenous knowledges, sciences, and perspectives into campus activities; and fosters Indigenous-led and community-based research. Her work also increases the Labrador Campus's visibility and relationships with the UArctic.

When not at work, Heather is a traditional seamstress, creating cultural Inuit clothing from sealskin and fur, some of which have been featured in fashion shows and the prominent “Red Amauti Project” for Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada. She also works with traditional plants like Labrador Tea, which she uses to craft soap, cream, and tea to share her cultural heritage in new and meaningful ways.
