Courtenay Griffin

Senior Communications Advisor, Strategic Priorities

Courtenay Griffin (Settler, she/her) is a senior communications advisor (strategic priorities) providing support for Memorial University’s Division of Marketing and Communications, Internationalization Office, Labrador Campus and Vice-President (Indigenous). In this role, she uses her experience in strategic communications and relationship-building to support Memorial’s strategic priorities and strengthen efforts to build a positive presence within its communities.

Prior to this, Courtenay spent 15 years with Memorial’s Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) where she provided strategic communications counsel to senior leaders and management, as well as planned, managed and implemented strategic communications for the department. As a senior communications advisor for CITL, she positioned the unit in times of change, developed alignment with institutional plans and activities, and provided communications support to leaders and a diverse set of staff teams. Whether supporting the unit’s growth from a “distance education” unit to a teaching and learning centre, understanding stakeholder needs to improve services or awareness, or redesigning its online presence, she provided strategic counsel while overseeing and implementing communications for the department.

Courtenay was born and raised in St. John’s, NL, and has a BA in psychology from Memorial and BPR from Mount Saint Vincent University. Early in her career, she spent time working for a hearing health care company in Victoria, BC, then a communications agency in Toronto, ON, before settling back home in St. John’s to begin her career at Memorial and to start and raise a family.

In her spare time, Courtenay enjoys being a mother to her two children, spending time with her partner and dog, hiking coastal trails, cooking, creative writing, travelling (while continuously adding destinations to her bucket list), and connecting with friends, family, and nature
