Continuing from my MA research, my PhD will include the complete analysis of archaeological site FjCa-51 (Sheshatshiu-3) located in Sheshatshiu, Labrador. The site is the largest recorded Intermediate period site in Upper Lake Melville, and perhaps the province. FjCa-51 is one of 185 recorded IP (3200-1800 years before present) archaeological sites within Upper Lake Melville with sixteen excavation areas containing evidence of food processing and preparation, quartzite quarrying, as well as stone tool production and maintenance. Furthermore, I will be discussing the lack of published analyses and results related to the Intermediate period, as most of the research in recent years has occurred within the framework of cultural resource management. This means that reports have been written, but in-depth analyses of the materials have not been undertaken or have only been published in consulting reports. This makes the research difficult to access and results in gaps in First Nation archaeological history. Due to this, I will also be examining the impact of cultural resource management practices on the Innu and Inuit of Labrador. Through this, I hope to bring a complete understanding of FjCa-51 to light as well as make recommendations for making Intermediate period and other cultural resource management research more accessible in Newfoundland and Labrador and include engagement with local Innu and non-Innu communities.
