Labour relations update: Tentative agreement reached, March 10, 2024
The negotiating teams for Memorial University and the Lecturers’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (LUMUN) have reached a tentative agreement on March 10, 2024.
Labour relations update: March 8
The union has indicated that it has set a strike deadline of 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 10, which means they may choose to strike effective Monday, March 11 at 12 a.m.
I want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to reach a mutually beneficial agreement and will be meeting throughout the weekend.
Update on what a positive strike vote means for the Memorial community: March 4, 2024
The Lecturers’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (LUMUN) announced Sunday, March 3, that union members voted in favour of a strike. This does not mean there will be a strike, but it is another step in the collective bargaining process and is necessary before a strike can occur.

Collective bargaining update: Feb. 27, 2024
At the request of the university, the parties met on Friday, February 23. The negotiating team for Memorial University presented a full package, including a monetary proposal, in our commitment to complete collective bargaining with LUMUN.
Collective bargaining update: Feb. 16, 2024
As noted in the university’s Feb. 8 update, the Lecturers’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (LUMUN) has advised the conciliator that they are not prepared to continue with the conciliation process.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, the conciliator submitted their report to the provincial minister responsible for labour indicating that negotiations had come to a standstill. The minister accepted this report, which triggered a 15-day cooling off period. At the end of this period, the union will be in position to take a strike vote as of Feb. 29, 2024.
Bargaining update: Feb. 8, 2024
Memorial University and the Lecturers Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (LUMUN) have been meeting with the aid of a provincial conciliator since spring 2023 on a revised collective agreement. LUMUN is the union representing per course instructors, who are individuals that teach up to two courses per semester in academic units across the university.
