Metal

Artifacts made from iron, lead, copper and pewter comprised almost half of the entire artifact assemblage. Iron nails made up the majority of the metal artifacts. Although the metal items were originally of European origin, many were refashioned to suit the needs of the Inuit. For example, iron spikes taken from abandoned European fishing stations were hammered into ulus, and copper coins and scraps of lead were converted into pendants.
