Root cellars were once used across Newfoundland to store vegetables like carrots and potatoes, throughout fall and winter. These structures were built by digging a hole in the earth and laying sod overtop, leaving a small door for access. While these strucutres are not used in modern times, they can still be found in the hills around communities like Seldom-Come-By.
