Exchange Programs

Go Abroad!

The Department of History welcomes exchange students from around the world, and offers opportunities to Memorial University students who would like to do part of their degree overseas. Exchange programs are a great way to spend some time away while getting course credits that count at your home institution.

Students from around the world

If you are interested in spending a term or two at Memorial University and take history courses, you should know that we are part of various partnerships with other universities that will facilitate your stay. We offer a variety of courses at different levels in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the United States, Latin America, and Europe, covering fields such as cultural, social, military, maritime, and environmental history. Students for whom English is not the first language will have access to support from the Writing Centre. We want to hear from you! Please get in touch with the Undergraduate Program Director or the Internationalization Office.

Students from Latin America and the Caribbean

Undergraduate and graduate students from Latin American and Caribbean countries interested in studying or researching at Memorial for four to six months can apply for funding through the program Emerging Leaders in the Americas (ELAP: https://www.educanada.ca/scholarships-bourses/can/institutions/elap-pfla.aspx?lang=eng). Applications will be submitted by Memorial on behalf of the student. If you are a history student from Latin America or the Caribbean and are interested in this program, please contact the Undergraduate Program Director or the Internationalization Office.

Memorial University students who want to go overseas

Memorial University is part of various partnerships and networks that facilitate exchange studies for undergraduate students. If there is a specific country or university you would like to go to, contact the Undergraduate Program Director or the Internationalization Office and we can discuss options available in view of your goals and interests. You should know that many universities around the world offer courses tailored to the needs of exchange students. Application deadlines are typically in February for the following Fall and in September for the following Winter.

University of the Arctic

Memorial University is part of the University of the Arctic (www.uarctic.org), a network that connects universities with expertise in Arctic and Northern subjects. History students might be interested, for example, in following opportunities:

Sámi University of Applied Sciences, in Norway, offers various courses taught in English about Sámi and Indigenous culture and history.

Umeå University, in Sweden, offers courses taught in English on subjects such as “Sami and Old Norse Religion/Nordic Religions” and “History of Forestry Ideas.”

Courses and programs offered through the University of the Arctic’s North2North exchange program can be found through their Study Catalogue, which is updated at regular intervals.

The North2North program offers funding for some universities. Memorial University students can also apply for various internal scholarships (https://www.mun.ca/goabroad/go-global-outbound/).
