M.A. Alumnus publishes in Inuit Studies
Heather`s paper, `State, Company, and Community Relations at the Polaris Mine (Nunavut),`analysis the evolving Inuit employment strategy in the northern mineral industry through the lens of the Polaris lead-zinc mine (1982-2002). The paper argues that mining offered Inuit from Resolute Bay few employment opportunities, despite the the federal government`s desire to use mining development as an engine of local employment growth in the Arctic. Heather`s paper is part of a larger special issue, Industrial Development and Mining Impacts, edited by Frank Tester and Sylvie Blangie. Heather is now pursuing doctoral studies in the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta.
