Lecture by Lisa Todd on German Southwest Africa

Wednesday, January 29, 2020

The Department of History and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Speaker: Lisa Todd (Department of History, University of New Brunswick)

Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Location: Nexus Centre, SN 4022

Description: In 1908, Eugen Fischer traveled to German Southwest Africa (Namibia) to conduct 'research' on the Rehoboth peoples, as part of his investigation into the hereditary effects of human 'race-mixing.' This illustrated talk uses Fischer's personal papers to examine the methodologies of an early 20th century racial anthropologist, to situate his research in the aftermath of the German-led genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples, and to briefly discuss links between Fischer's findings and later Nazi racial ideology.
