Farewell to Marica Cassis
The Department of History says farewell to Marica Cassis and thanks her for her contributions to scholarship, her collegiality as faculty member, and her dedication to students during her years at Memorial. Dr. Cassis has left Memorial and accepted a position as Associate Professor and Interim Department Head in Classics and Religion at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Marica Cassis is a well-known historian and archaeologist of medieval Byzantium and of Christianity in the late antique and early medieval Mediterranean world. As Assistant Director and Byzantine Project Director, she is one of the leading scholars investigating the Byzantine settlement Çadir Höyük in central Turkey, for which she has earned a major SSHRC research grant and about which she has published important contributions.
At Memorial, Marica Cassis taught a variety of courses in Byzantine, Islamic, and early Christian history, and supervised students in all these fields. She brought attention to the history of the Middle East through the organization of several events (see here and here). Since 2017, she served as Head of the Department of History.
She will be greatly missed by students and colleagues. The Department wishes her all the best in her new position!
