Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls at Memorial
In 2017, slips, trips, and falls (STF) accounted for 41 per cent of all reported incidents through Memorial’s reporting channels like MUN Safe app and MIMS.
We can all take a role in helping to reduce this statistic. Being aware of our surroundings, identifying potential hazards and reporting them is key. Please share this information in your units with faculty, staff and students to ensure everyone becomes more aware of this risk especially at this time of the year when winter conditions are present.
By increasing reporting, safety hazards like icy walkways, wet floors or uncleared paths can be addressed and measures taken to make our campuses safer for everyone.
If see something that could cause an accident or you have an accident, please use the MUN Safe app to report it.
You can also follow these tips to reduce your risk of a slip, trip or fall:
- Slow down Pay attention to your surroundings (don’t text and walk)
- Wear proper footwear for the weather conditions
- Wipe off your feet when entering buildings
- Avoid shortcuts and stay in designated walking areas
- Hold handrails while on stairs
