On July 1, 2015, WorkplaceNL introduced new guidelines that required Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committees, Worker Health and Safety (WHS) Representatives and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Designates to re-certify every three years.

Under this new system, the certification for anyone who completed training prior to July 1, 2015 is still valid, and they have until June 30, 2018 to complete the new training or re-certification program. Certification must then be renewed every three years.

There are currently three options for re-certification.

1.   Complete the new online re-certification course for OHS Committees and WHS Representatives/Designates.

WorkplaceNL has developed an online re certification course that is available through the Certification Training Registry (CTR). The course is free of charge and will take approximately two hours to complete.

Please note that you can only take the re-certification course if you have previously completed approved in-class training. Acceptable in-class training would include the old three day OHS Committee or the day and a half-day WHS Representative/Designate courses, as well as the current two-day training program.

2.   Complete the new half day in-class re-certification course with a WorkplaceNL approved training provider.

Please note that you can only take the in-class re-certification course if you have previously completed approved in-class training. Acceptable in-class training would include the old three day OHS Committee or the day and a half-day WHS Representative/Designate courses, as well as the current two-day training program.

3.   Complete the regular two-day in-class certification course with a WorkplaceNL approved training provider.

Anyone wishing to complete online re-certification must first create a CTR account by visiting http://ctr.bluedrop.io/ and complete the sign-in process. Once your account has been created, you can select the online re-certification course from the list of certification training standards.

During the course registration process you will be asked to provide your previous certification training number (issued by WorkplaceNL). If you have misplaced your old training card you can complete an online request and a WorkplaceNL representative will verify your training record and contact you via email with course login access. Another option is to contact WorkplaceNL at 1-800-563-9000, option 0. Please note WorkplaceNL will not reprint training cards.

OHS Committees, Representatives and Designates serve a vital function in the workplace and are responsible for monitoring and supporting health and safety programs. Re-certification training will help these individuals identify and address health and safety issues and help to prevent incidents before they happen. Please communicate the requirement to recertify by June 30, 2018 to your co-workers and contacts.
