We welcome applications for the Master of Gender Studies degree program from applicants outside of Canada who can, based on their undergraduate education (in Gender Studies or other areas), demonstrate a strong academic background, a breadth of relevant knowledge and the ability to conduct independent research.

Applicants to the Master of Gender Studies program may be admitted with a limited undergraduate education in academic Gender Studies, but may also be required to complete additional courses as part of their MGS degree requirements.

About the Program

The Master of Gender Studies degree program is an interdisciplinary, two-year graduate program. It provides an opportunity to explore, in a supportive community of learners, issues that shape women's and men's lives, including their societal positions and relationship to equality and social justice.

Located in the Department of Gender Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the graduate program draws on faculty members with full-time appointments to Gender Studies and on affiliated faculty members from a wide range of disciplines across the university. The program's aim is to educate students to be able to engage, at advanced levels, in theoretical and practical issues related to women and gender. Many graduates have gone on to employment in related areas, including positions in Foreign Affairs, the Canadian Senate, universities and with not-for-profit organizations, in Canada and abroad.

Admission

Admission to the program is competitive. A university Bachelors degree (honours level, if available) is the minimal expected admission requirement.

Graduate students are admitted in the fall term only and can expect to be studying, on a full-time or part-time basis.

All applications for admission must be sent to the School of Graduate Studies and should not be sent to the Department of Gender Studies.

If you are offered admission to the Master of Gender Studies program, you must inform us about your decision to attend by 01 August. Notification after this deadline will limit funding opportunities.

Funding

We endeavour to make some funding available to all graduate students admitted on a full-time basis. Normally, some of this funding is available over the duration of the two-year degree program. In addition to this, some additional university-wide scholarships and bursaries are available; some of these are restricted to Canadian citizens.

Graduate scholarships offered in the Department of Gender Studies are not restricted to Canadian citizens.

Program Requirements

The Master of Gender Studies offers three routes to degree completion:

Thesis
Project
Internship

All routes require that you complete at least four required, graduate-level courses and select from amongst related elective courses from across the university. You will be assigned a first-year advisor who will help you to make course selections and determine the most appropriate degree route.

Theses must meet the academic requirements established by the School of Graduate Studies. Projects and internships provide options for applied feminist knowledge, in Canada and abroad.

If your first language is not English and you have not completed a degree at a recognized university where the sole language of instruction was English, you will be required to take the English Language Placement Test upon arrival. The test has both a written and an oral component, and is administered once each semester. Based on the results of this test, you may be require to enrol in a course of study designed to improve your communication and comprehension in English.

Graduate students should expect to reside in St. John's, Newfoundland until the completion of the required course work.

Graduate tuition at Memorial University is amongst the lowest in Canada, even for overseas students. St. John's is the province's capital city, with a range of amenities, beautiful ocean coastlines and a vibrant university and academic community.
