According to Leach, he was 60 in 1950. There were two men named James Maher of about that same age living in Flatrock at the time: one was 65 and the other 66.
From James, Leach collected four songs ("The Spanish Captain," "The Golden Vanity," "Sally Monroe," "Bound Down to Newfoundland") as well as stories: one on fairy abduction of a child, one of an adult, and a personal experience narrative about hearing fairy voices.
