MacEdward Leach and the Songs of Atlantic Canada

John Campbell

A native of Boularderie, John Campbell lived and worked most of his adult life in Sydney. He was a well-known bard, and in 1947 published a collection of English hymns translated into Gaelic. Debatably his most popular composition, "Marbhrann," which laments the death of his first wife, was recorded by MacEdward Leach and published in Fad Air Falbh As Innse Gall: Beyond the Hebrides. His daughter, Mae Campbell Cameron, became the director of the Gaelic choir "Oranaiche Cheap Breatuinn," and edited many collections of Cape Breton Gaelic song.
