Originally Pene’katik in the Mi’kmaq language, it was known in Gaelic as Na Maise, or “The Marsh.” Located between Christmas Island and Castle Bay on the Bras d’Or Lakes, the Benacadie area is actually comprised of many smaller communities, some of which are Benacadie Glen, Benacadie Pond, and West and East Benacadie.

The area was settled in the early to mid 1800s, mostly by emigrants from the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides.
