Newfoundland and Labrador is located on the most easterly edge of North America. It is home to the oldest settlement and the oldest city in North America, but is the youngest province of Canada.

The population of Newfoundland and Labrador is relatively small at approximately 510,000. Just over one-third, approximately 181,000, live in and around the capital city of St. John's.

Climate

Don't be put off by what you hear about Newfoundland weather!

Sure, it can be windy, rainy or foggy in St. John's on any given day - but that can change quickly to blue skies and sunshine by lunch time.

We have what's known as a temperate climate. Winters here are generally mild with an average temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.

During the summer months, the temperature can go from cool to hot with an average of 20 - 23 degrees Celsius. Even on the hottest day, there's always an ocean breeze to keep you comfortable.

On average, the annual rainfall is 1191 millimetres and annual snowfall is 322 centimetres.

Geography and People 

Newfoundland and Labrador is surrounded by the North Atlantic, is home to iceberg alley and offers a unique geological landscape with vast open and preserved space featuring some of the oldest rocks in the world.  The province offers limitless opportunities for outdoor advernture and exploration.

Descendents of the English, Irish, French and Aboriginal Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are proud of their heritage and are known for their friendly nature and rich and colourful dialect.
