Planned tunnel work
Facilities Management advises that throughout the summer, contractors will be working on sections of Memorial’s academic tunnels to re-waterproof the exterior. This is a multi-year and multi-phase project with the following tunnel sections planned for completion this spring and summer:
- Education to the main locker tunnel
- Paton College to the main locker tunnel
- Science to Arts and Administration
- Henrietta Harvey to Arts and Administration
- Physical Education to Arts and Administration
- QEII Library to the University Centre
This re-waterproof work is phase one to improve the experience in these portions of the tunnels and aesthetic interior refurbishment will be completed as part of a later phase.
While excavation works are occurring to expose the top and side walls of a given tunnel section, that section of the tunnel will be closed to pedestrians. The tunnel section will be re-opened during waterproofing and reinstatement work. Communication of these closures will occur in advance via Newsline and the accessibility channel of MUN Safe, and signage will be posted. Units should consider business or accessibility impacts during these closures.
Some walkways, sidewalks, crosswalks and roadways in areas of excavation will also be impacted, and some localized building water and power outages may be required. These will also be communicated through Newsline and MUN Safe.
This work is part of a larger program to boost Memorial’s infrastructure renewal and is helping Memorial continue to evolve as we transform with transparency, purpose and courage.
