Purchased in 2013, the former Battery Hotel was a landmark property for the city and now takes on a whole new life as part of Memorial. The Emera Innovation Exchange (EIX), Memorial's engagement and innovation space at Memorial's Signal Hill campus, recently won an award of excellence in institutional design. Lat 49 Architecture Inc. was the architecture company behind the design, lead by Architect Jeremy Bryant. Facilities Management oversaw the project which started in 2015 and was completed in 2018.

Noted in the award for architecture excellence is the design of the main interior staircase that "performs double duty, providing a transition between levels and seats to gather for lectures and performances".
