Compassionate Crossings- Healthcare Entrepreneur Dream

Country of Origin: India

ETP Year: 2023/2024

Education: Bachelor's degree: Applied Psychology, Msc. Clinical Psychology, Master of Public Health

An alumnus of our ETP program, Shriya Vashisht is embarking on a transformative journey fueled by compassion and a deep desire to provide innovative solutions that empower individuals facing challenges to live independently and create a better world for themselves.

Why did you participate in ETP?

I participated in the Entrepreneurial Training Program (ETP) to merge my entrepreneurial aspirations with my background in psychology. Having worked as a psychologist in India, I have supported the special needs community and developed a deep passion for helping individuals with disabilities. Through my entrepreneurial venture, I aim to create innovative solutions that improve their daily lives.

My motivation stems from my experiences working with children and families with special needs. I vividly remember my first interaction with a child with autism, which left a lasting impression on me. His mother expressed concern about her child's future independence, particularly with daily activities. This experience highlighted the need for better support, especially for those with motor impairments, and inspired me to seek out ETP as a platform to turn my ideas into action.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned through ETP?

The most valuable lesson I learned through the Entrepreneurial Training Program (ETP) is the importance of resilience and adaptability in business. Through the program, I gained a deeper understanding of navigating the legal landscape, identifying resources, and leveraging opportunities—skills I lacked due to my non-business background. The ETP sessions helped me shape my ideas into something viable and reliable, offering the support I needed to take practical steps toward entrepreneurship.

How has this lesson benefited you in your career and business pursuits?

This lesson has greatly benefited my career and business pursuits by enabling me to approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset. I now understand that failure and iteration are part of the process, which has given me the confidence to refine my product and adapt it to market needs.

What is the most valuable skill you developed through ETP & how has it benefited you?

The most valuable skill I developed through ETP is strategic thinking. Learning from the experiences of successful founders and understanding the nuances of business planning and execution has equipped me with the tools to think critically about my venture's direction. This skill has been essential in refining my business model and moving forward with clear, actionable steps.

What is the most valuable connection you made through ETP?

The most beneficial connection I made through ETP was with the entrepreneurship community at Memorial University. Their support, insights, and encouragement have been instrumental in helping me push forward with my ideas. The environment has been motivating, allowing me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams without hesitation. I'm grateful for the network of like-minded individuals who have shared their knowledge and provided invaluable guidance throughout this journey.

What is your #1 tip to students considering entrepreneurship?

My #1 tip to students considering entrepreneurship is to follow your passion and take chances. Getting caught up in making a profit is easy, but the key to long-term success is turning your passion into a business. When you are passionate about what you do, the motivation to keep going never fades, even during tough times. Focus on building something that aligns with your interests and values—this will sustain your efforts and keep you driven throughout your entrepreneurial journey.

What are you up to now?

I am focused on obtaining the necessary licenses and certifications to enhance my professional expertise. Driven by a strong desire to impact society positively, I understand the importance of acquiring the knowledge, skills, and professional qualifications needed to bring my vision to life.

My goal is to create a brand that offers adaptive clothing that is both accessible and affordable. To achieve this, I am actively collaborating with professionals to deepen my understanding of the unique needs of individuals with disabilities.

Guided by equality, compassion, and inclusivity values, I envision building a brand that empowers individuals to live with dignity and independence, enabling them to participate in daily activities fully. Ultimately, I aim to help individuals with disabilities thrive. At the same time, I recognize the importance of acquiring the professional knowledge and expertise required to bring this vision to life and make a meaningful impact.
