Finding Clarity: A Journey of Confidence and Purpose

Country of Origin: Iran

ETP Year: 2023/2024

Education: Master's in Environmental Systems Engineering and Management, Memorial University of Newfoundland

An ETP alumnus and Master’s student at Memorial University, Erfan Roueintan, is turning innovative ideas into impactful, real-world solutions. Focused on sustainability, pollution prevention, and strategic communication, he harnesses the power of  Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and green marketing to address pressing environmental challenges. Through leadership roles at ClimaFacts and award-winning social ventures, Erfan reflects the ETP spirit of entrepreneurship, community engagement, and sustainable transformation.

Why did you participate in ETP?

I joined the Entrepreneurial Training Program (ETP)  because I needed structure. I had ideas, but they were scattered, and I wasn't sure how to bring them to life. I wanted to understand the business side of sustainability, learn from experts, and connect with like-minded individuals who shared my drive to make an impact. The opportunity to gain entrepreneurial knowledge while staying rooted in my environmental mission made ETP the perfect fit for me.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned through ETP?

The most valuable lesson I learned was confidence. I used to second-guess myself, unsure if I had what it took to be an entrepreneur. Through the workshops, mentorship, and hands-on exercises, I realized that entrepreneurship isn't about having all the answers—it's about being willing to find them. ETP taught me to embrace challenges, trust my instincts, and take decisive action even when the path ahead isn't fully mapped out.

How has this lesson benefited you in your career and business pursuits?

Confidence has been a game-changer. Before joining the ETP, I hesitated to put my ideas out there. I actively engage in environmental initiatives, take leadership roles, and communicate my vision without hesitation. Whether presenting ideas, pitching sustainability projects, or collaborating with stakeholders, I approach everything with the belief that I can make an impact.

What is the most valuable skill you developed through ETP & how has it benefited you?

Strategic thinking. Through the ETP, I learned how to analyze problems, identify opportunities, and develop structured plans. One of the key takeaways was learning how to leverage resources effectively—whether it's funding opportunities, partnerships, or marketing strategies. These skills have been instrumental in shaping my approach to environmental problem-solving and innovation.

What is the most valuable connection you made through ETP?

One of the most impactful connections I made was with fellow ETP participants. Being surrounded by driven, passionate individuals created a strong support system. We exchanged ideas, provided feedback, and helped each other refine our ventures. These connections have continued beyond the program, evolving into professional collaborations and friendships that keep me motivated.

What is your #1 tip to students considering entrepreneurship?

Leap. Entrepreneurship is not about having a perfect plan from the start—it's about learning as you go. If you have an idea or a passion, don't wait until you feel "ready." Get involved, seek out mentorship, and start building. The journey itself will equip you with the knowledge and confidence you need.

What are you up to now?

Since completing ETP, I've been actively involved in environmental sustainability, blending technical expertise with community-driven initiatives. I currently serve as a Board Director at ClimaFacts, a student-led non-profit that makes complex climate research easy to understand and accessible for Atlantic Canadians. Through this role, I help shape strategies to communicate climate data effectively and combat misinformation, ensuring that environmental knowledge reaches the people who need it most.

In addition to my work with ClimaFacts, My team and I were awarded Second Place at the Social Impact-a-thon: Ready4ClimateAction, organized by the Centre for Social Enterprise at Memorial University in December 2024. Our "Roots & Routes" project focused on creating a meaningful impact in Newfoundland and Labrador by addressing key local challenges. This transformative experience fostered critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity as my team and I collaborated intensively to brainstorm and pitch an innovative solution. The recognition highlighted our dedication to driving social and environmental change and provided funding to pursue our idea further.

If ETP students wish to contact you to learn from your experience and seek your advice, how can they contact you?

Sure, it is my pleasure to share insights, and I can be contacted via my LinkedIn, www.linkedin.com/in/erfanroueintan or my email: sroueintan@mun.ca.

Final thoughts

The ETP was more than just a program—it was a transformative experience that shaped my mindset and career. It gave me the confidence to move forward purposefully, knowing I have the skills and resilience to make a difference. Take the first step if you're thinking about entrepreneurship but feel uncertain. The clarity you seek comes from action, and ETP is the perfect place to start.
