Congratulations to Dr. Abimbola on the Completion of PhD Degree with Distinction

Majeed Abimbola, a PhD student who was supervised by Dr. Faisal Khan, recently passed his final oral examination and thesis defense with distinction on April 22, 2016.

Dr. Abimbola received an MSc. In Petroleum Engineering at African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Nigeria and joined MUN in 2012. His research is titled Dynamic Safety Analysis of Managed Pressure Drilling Operations.

“I was glad to be one member of the C-RISE, which is a professional research group in the area of safety and risk engineering in Canada. We may have different backgrounds from Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, it brings us together to share knowledge and experience, along with the development of this research group.” Dr. Abimbola said. “As well, it was my honor to be involved in the Inco research project and many thanks to the funding supporter Vale, NSERC and other associations. I am highly indebted to my mother, wife, kids and bosom friend, Saheed Busura, for being there for me through thick and thin”.

Within the last four years, Dr. Abimbola has published five papers in peer-reviewed journals and two presentations with related papers in international conferences. He has developed predictive and diagnostic models for analyzing the stages of drilling operations - drilling ahead, tripping, casing and cementing operations. The algorithms for dynamic safety analysis of drilling operation are based on physical reliability models and Bayesian updating mechanism. The diagnostic model for analyzing the rotating control device was developed as a key element for the high performance of managed pressure drilling techniques. Dr. Abimbola also proffered ways of managing risk in these developed models which include safety functions and inherent safety principles, redundancy, and re-engineering for a better performance. A new approach of consequence modelling was developed by using loss function for drilling operations and the use of Noisy-OR logic concept in capturing the unique relationships between casing and cementing operations. Ultimately, the developed sub-models were integrated into a usable tool for a holistic analysis of drilling operations.

Congratulations to Dr. Abimbola on the completion of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and we sincerely wish him a successful career future.
