Consultation Period

To inform the development of an equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism strategic plan for Memorial University, the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (EDI-AR) office completed 80 consultation sessions across the many faculties, schools, offices and communities of all Memorial campuses.

In addition, an online survey of Memorial University's student community was held in April 2023. Members of the Memorial community also had the option to submit written or audio responses via email.

The experiences, observations and suggestions shared during these confidential virtual and in-person consultation sessions, and in surveys and individual emailed responses, have been compiled in a document called What We Heard and What We Learned, which will inform the development of our strategic plan.

Student Survey

During April 2024, the Office of the Vice-Provost, EDI-AR completed an online survey via Qualtrics. This survey was available to all students of Memorial University, across all campuses. The survey was advertised through our website, our Facebook and Twitter accounts, other Memorial University social media accounts, email newsletters to the Memorial community, and printed posters and postcards.

The survey results asked the following four questions, which were also used in the consultation sessions:

  1. With regards to EDI-AR, what is Memorial University currently doing well?
  2. At the current time, with respect to EDI-AR, what are some areas for improvement?
  3. Looking forward 5-10 years from now, what should/could EDI-AR at Memorial “look like”?
  4. Thinking about the kinds of things you would like to see in 5-10 years, what activities/actions do you suggest we undertake to get there?

Respondents to the student survey had the option to enter a prize draw for a gift certificate to the Memorial University Bookstore. Entry in the prize draw was optional and not connected to student survey responses.

We received 935 responses to our student survey. These responses will help the Office of the Vice-Provost’s EDI-AR team develop an EDI-AR Strategic Plan, and information received via the survey will be shared through our upcoming report, What We Heard and What We Learned.

Email Submissions

Members of the Memorial community who wished to contribute to the consultation period outside of the consultation sessions and/or the student survey were invited to submit their responses to the EDI-AR office by email.

Email submissions were accepted in written and audio formats. As in the consultation sessions and the student survey, respondents were asked to respond to the following four questions:
