Personal Profile
Dr. May joined the Department of Economics and the Faculty of Business Administration in 1978. He currently teaches in the MER and MBA programs as well as undergraduate labour market economics. Prior to his coming to Memorial, he taught at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Saskatchewan, and Acadia University.
His research interests include measuring the determinants of well-being, poverty and income inequality measurement, community and regional development, tax policy, productivity measurement and labour market issues. He has published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Econometrics, the Internal Economic Review and the Canadian Journal of Economics.
Over the past 30 years he has worked closely with the provincial government overseeing the development of the structure of the Community Accounts while also leading research efforts in measuring poverty, into the causes of unemployment, the nature of demographic change, macroeconomic econometric modelling, and labour market analysis for policy development
He has been a member of the executive Committee of the Canadian Economics Association and of the editorial board of the Canadian Economics Association. He was Past President of the Atlantic Canada Economics Association and a former Head of the department. He is currently a member of the National Statistics Council and also the Macroeconomic Accounts Advisory Committee of Statistics Canada.
