Technology Requirements

This page outlines the standard minimum technological requirements to fully participate in most online courses at Memorial.

Some courses may have technology requirements that differ from those here. In those cases, students will hear directly from the academic unit. Any additional hardware or software requirements for a specific online course will be included in the course listings. 

Requirements

Experience

  • Basic comfort level using a personal computer (file management, word processing and printing).
  • Experience with modern web browsers (Edge, Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome).

Computer

Many courses and course requirements can be completed using a recent mobile device. However, CITL recommends having access to a desktop computer or laptop with these specifications:

  • Modern PC, Mac or Chromebook.
  • Recent and actively supported operating system that runs modern web tools (Windows 10, macOS 10.13+ or ChromeOS).
  • Adequate hard drive space available to run software and work on course files.
  • Speakers or headset for listening to audio/video and participating in synchronous sessions.
  • Microphone and webcam (headset with microphone preferred) for participating in synchronous sessions.

Display

  • Full-colour monitor running at 1024x768 resolution or higher.

Web Browser

  • Latest version of Edge, Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome.
  • Support for Javascript and cookies.
  • Complete the Browser Check to test if you support the minimum requirements for Brightspace.
  • Complete the Cisco Network Test to test if your computing environment supports the minimum requirements for Webex.

Mobile Devices

  • Android 5 or higher.
  • Latest iOS release point greater than 9. (e.g. 9.3.5 or 10.3.2).
  • Windows 10.

Internet Connection

  • Regular access to high-speed internet (e.g. DSL, cable or fibre) with upload and download speeds of at least 3 Mbps.

Additional Requirements

Online courses use a variety of tools and services, some of which may require additional technical requirements.

Online Rooms

Some courses may have optional or required synchronous components. Additional system requirements are needed for the Online Rooms tool:

  • Computer: PC or Mac (desktop or laptop).
  • Mobile: iPad, iPhone or Android.
    • Note: The desktop share feature is not supported on mobile.
  • Web browser: Most recent version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
    • Note: In Virtual Classroom meetings, desktop share is only fully supported in Chrome and Microsoft Edge. In Firefox, you can share a single application window.
  • Bandwidth: Minimum 1 Mbps upload and download speeds (wired connection recommended).
  • Network Ports:
    • TCP: 80, 443.
    • UDP*: 16384-65535 (UDP outbound communication not required, but will improve performance).

Online Proctoring

Online course instructors may offer online proctoring as part of their assessment strategy. To use this service, if available for your course, you need a Windows or Mac computer that meets the equipment requirements listed on the ProctorU website.
