#MUNTLC25 Memorial keynote: Dr. Isabelle Côté
The Memorial keynote speaker for this year's Teaching & Learning Conference is Dr. Isabelle Côté, an award-winning researcher on nativism in federal states and the role of population movements on intrastate conflict and contentious politics in Asia and beyond.
Dr. Côté is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She received Memorial's Presidents Award for Outstanding Teaching (faculty) in 2024 and the 2020 Canadian Political Science Association (CPSA) Teaching Award, and she is currently on the executive board of Women in International Security-Canada (WIIS-C).
Her keynote address, Slow Teaching: A Reflective Approach to Teaching and Learning, will highlight how the actual approach of ‘slow teaching’ can help us address some of the key challenges we face in the classroom by looking at specific instructional approaches appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate courses, including critical reflection and a scaffolded final blog project meant for a general audience. She'll explore the growing calls for slow scholarship and its transformational potential for pedagogical approaches.
In addition to her keynote, Dr. Côté is part of the conference's Teaching Dialogues plenary on the afternoon of May 1. For a preview of that conversation, please watch our series of Innovation Talks videos with Dr.Côté, visiting keynote speaker Dr. Sarah Eaton and conference faculty chair Dr. Jeannette Byrne.
