Active Learning Classrooms
Engaging, Inclusive and Future Ready
Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are flexible learning spaces designed to easily shift between traditional lectures and collaborative group work. This adaptability creates an interactive environment where students can actively participate, share ideas and learn from each other and their instructors.
ALCs are:
- Inclusive and Supportive: ALCs are built to welcome students from all backgrounds, fostering a sense of connection and belonging.
- Engaging and Collaborative: Seamless transitions between group work, discussion and one-on-one interactions keep students involved and motivated.
- Future-Focused: By integrating technology and teamwork into the learning experience, ALCs prepare students for the collaborative, problem-solving environments they’ll encounter in their careers.
ALCs enhance the student's learning environment through:
- More meaningful connections with instructors and peers.
- A learning experience that promotes deeper understanding and long-term retention.
- Opportunities to develop essential professional skills, including communication, teamwork and critical thinking
CSF5115: AI Active Learning Classroom
- Classroom materials can be shown on only the main display screen or on the monitors of a group sitting at specific pods.
- During lessons, student work can be shared between different workstation screens or displayed at the same time on every screen in the room.
EN2048: Mechanical Engineering
- Students are seated in groups of 5-8 rather than individual seats.
- Classrooms are on one level, rather than in a tiered configuration.
- Technology is used to increase student-student and student-teacher interactions.
- Wall-mounted and portable whiteboards are available for note-taking and problem-solving.
EN3002: Engineering One (EO)
- This new active learning classroom has an accessible instructor station and multiple student pods, complete with video displays and wireless collaboration technology.
- The room is used to teach classes, conduct design labs and complete tutorials.
- When not used for instructor-led activities, students can use the space to connect and collaborate on group assignments and projects.
HSC3444: School of Pharmacy
- Students learn together mostly in small groups, clustered around individual workstations.
- During group work, students use their own laptops or mobile devices, usually connecting wirelessly to a display screen at each student pod.
