Legal French for Beginners – Continuing Professional Development Opportunity

The Fédération des Francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, in partnership with Memorial University and the Centre Canadien de français juridique, and with the support of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, plans to offer a series of beginner to intermediate micro-courses in Legal French.

The goal of this pilot project is to enhance the professional skills of legal practitioners by improving their French proficiency, enabling them to better serve the diverse needs of the French-speaking community in Newfoundland and Labrador. No previous French experience is required.

The course includes registration for the DELF exam. The DELF diploma is internationally recognized and valid for life (see more: DELF-DALF).

The course qualifies for CPD credit under the Law Society’s Continuing Professional Development Program.

Time Commitment

This series will begin on October 1, 2024, and run until August 16, 2025. The series is structured into units that build up from one another as the course progresses.

The course includes two 90-minute weekly sessions focusing on beginner-intermediate French. For every 10 hours of beginner-intermediate French sessions, attendees will also attend a 60-minute online session focused on legal terminology.

Time and Place

The lectures will take place at Memorial University’s Nexus Centre (SN 4022) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 PM, and online on Fridays (every three weeks). Lectures can also be attended online, and recordings will be accessible if missed.

Cost

Due to limited spaces, early registration is encouraged. As this is a pilot project, registration fees for this year are subsidized. The total cost for the series (October to August) is $1,500. Participants will also need to purchase an online workbook for $99.
