Geographic barriers in speciation

    The Grand Canyon of northwestern Arizona (inset map) serves as a geographic barrier to gene flow. Morphologically distinctive wquirrels living on the north (left) or south rim (right) are variously regarded as full species (S. kaibabensis & S. aberti) or as subspecies of Sciurus aberti.
