David suffered from Severe Combined Immunodeficienty Disease (SCID) from birth,
and survived only by complete isolation in a germ-free environemnt. He
died at age of 12 following a bone marrow transplant. Other SCID
patients have been sucessfully treated by somatic gene therapy.
