Antler Allometry in miniature Neotropical deer
"Spike" antlers in Neotropical Pudus
(Pudu) and Brocket Deer (Mazama) appear to be consequences
of convergent allometry during parallel evolution of small body size.
Mazama is more closely related to typical large-bodied Nearctic
White-tailed and Mule Deer (Odocoileus) and Pudus to large-bodied, endemic South American
species such as Huemul, Pampas Deer, and Marsh Deer (Hippocamelus,
Ozotoceros, and Blastocerus).
