Phylogenetic classification of phocine seals of the Northwest Atlantic (Carr & Perry 1997)

The arrangement, based on molecular analysis, is identical with that of Muizon (1982) based on morphology. Molecular work in progress indicates that Cystophora is in fact the sister group to other phocines (except for Erignathus) and that this arrangement  will therefore require revsion.
