Symbols used in pedigree charts

    Note the method of identifying individuals in a pedigree: Roman numerals indicate generations, numbers indicate the order of individuals in each generation. The propositus (or proband) (II.2) is the individual through whom the trait in question was first is brought to the attention of investigators. A consanguineous ('shared blood') marriage is one in which the partners have at least one ancestor in common.
