Lord Kelvin on
the Age of the Earth (1895)
Based on the
assumption that the Sun burned by conventional processes
known in the 1890s, and experiments with the cooling of
heated balls, Lord Kelvin calculated that the Sun was
less than 300 Myr old, that the Earth was
less than 40 MYr old, and would have been habitable
for a period of 10 ~ 30 Myr only.
