Geographic variation in the frequency of the HbS allele in humans

Hemoglobin S is a variant of the beta-hemoglobin chain, which when homozgyous (SS) is responsible for Sickle Cell Anemia. It occurs at relatively high frequencies in equatorial Africa, and is elsewhere rare.
